The Importance of Physics to Society

A statement adopted by IUPAP, March 1999.

Physics¡©the study of matter, energy and their interactions¡©is an international enterprise which plays a key role in the future progress of humankind. The support of physics education and research in all countries is important because:

1. Physics is an exciting intellectual adventure that inspires young people and expands the frontiers of our knowledge about Nature.

2. Physics generates fundamental knowledge needed for the future technological

advances that will continue to drive the economic engines of the world.

3. Physics contributes to the technological infrastructure and provides trained personnel

needed to take advantage of scientific advances and discoveries.

4. Physics is an important element in the education of chemists, engineers and computer

scientists, as well as practitioners of the other physical and biomedical sciences.

5. Physics extends and enhances our understanding of other disciplines, such as the earth, agricultural, chemical, biological, and environmental sciences, plus astronomy and

cosmology¡©subjects of substantial importance to all peoples of the world.

6. Physics improves our quality of life by providing the basic understanding necessary for

developing new instrumentation and techniques for medical applications, such as

computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography,

ultrasonic imaging, and laser surgery.

In summary, for all these reasons, physics, is an essential part of the educational system and of an advanced society. We therefore urge all governments to seek advice from physicists and other scientists on matters of science policy, and to be supportive of the science of Physics. This support can take many forms such as:

- Building and maintaining strong departments in universities (and other academic

institutions) with opportunities for grants to support research.

- Scholarships and fellowships for both undergraduate and graduate students studying

physics.

- Adequate funding for national laboratories and the formation of new ones as

appropriate.

- Funding for international activities and collaborations.

- National programs to improve physics teaching at all levels of the educational system.

¿ÀÈÄ¿¡´Â IUPAP ÀçÁ¤À§¿øÈ¸ÀÇ À繫º¸°í°¡ ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. Çѱ¹Àº ´ÙÇàÈ÷ ¹Ð¸° ºÎ´ã±ÝÀÌ ¾ø¾î ´ÙÇàÀ̾úÀ¸³ª ºÎ´ã±Ý ¹Ì³³ÀÎ ³ª¶ó´Â ÀÔÀåÀÌ ´Ù¼Ò ³­Ã³ÇÏ¿´´Ù. IUPAPÀÇ ÀçÁ¤Àº ³Ë³ËÇÏÁö ¾ÊÁö¸¸ ¸¹Àº ºÐ°ú¿¡¼­ ±¹Á¦È¸ÀÇ Áö¿ø±ÝÀ» ¿Ã¸®ÀÚ´Â ÀǰßÀÌ ¸¹¾ÒÀ¸³ª ¾ÕÀ¸·ÎÀÇ ÀçÁ¤ÇüÆíÀ» °í·ÁÇØ¼­ Á¤Çϱâ·Î ÇÏ°í ´çºÐ°£ ÇöÇà´ë·Î Áö¿øÇϱâ·Î ÇÏ¿´´Ù. ¶Ç ¾ÕÀ¸·Î 3³â°£Àº ºÎ´ã±Ý¾×µµ ¿ª½Ã µ¿°á½Ã۱â·Î ÇÏ¿´´Ù.

¸¶Áö¸·³¯(20ÀÏ)¿¡´Â UNESCO »ç¹«ÃÑÀåÀÎ F. MayerÀÇ ¿¬¼³ÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. ÁÖ·Î ±¹Á¦ Çù·Â°ú »óÈ£±³·ù¸¦ °­Á¶ÇÏ¿´À¸¸ç ¾ÕÀ¸·ÎÀÇ °úÇйßÀüÀº Çѳª¶óÀÇ ÈûÀ¸·Î ÀÌ·èµÉ ¼ö ¾ø°í ±¹Á¦Àû »óÈ£Çù·Â¸¸ÀÌ Áß¿äÇÑ ¿äüÀÓÀ» ¿ª¼³ÇÏ¿´´Ù. ´ÙÇàÈ÷ ±×ÀÇ ¿¬¼³ °¡¿îµ¥ ±¹Á¦Àû Çù·Â Â÷¿ø¿¡¼­ UNESCO°¡ ¾ÕÀ¸·Î Çѱ¹ÀÇ ¾Æ¡¤ÅÂÀ̷й°¸®Çм¾ÅÍ(APCTP)¸¦ Àû±Ø Áö¿øÇÒ °èȹÀ̶ó´Â ¾ðÁúÀ» ÁÖ¾ú´Ù.

±×ÀÇ ¿¬¼³ÀÌ ³¡³­ ´ÙÀ½ ºÐ°úÀ§¿ø ¼±Á¤¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ÃÖÁ¾ ÅõÇ¥°¡ ÁøÇàµÇ¾úÀ¸¸ç Çѱ¹Àº 2Ç¥ÀÇ ÅõÇ¥±ÇÀ» Çà»çÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ¾ú´Ù. µû¶ó¼­ À̳¯ ºÐ°úÀ§¿øµéÀº ÃÖÁ¾ÀûÀ¸·Î È®Á¤µÈ °ÍÀÌ´Ù.

³¡À¸·Î IUPAP´Â °¢±¹ Á¤ºÎ°¡ ¹°¸®ÇÐ ¹ßÀüÀ» À§ÇÏ¿© Àû±ØÀûÀ¸·Î Áö¿øÇϵµ·Ï ÇÏ´Â °áÀǹ®À» äÅÃÇÏ°í °¢±¹ ´ëÇ¥µéÀÌ °¢±¹ Á¤ºÎ¿¡ ¼ÛºÎÇϵµ·Ï ÇÏ¿´´Ù.(°áÀǹ® ÂüÁ¶) ¶Ç, ¹°¸®Çп¡ Á¾»çÇÏ´Â ¿©¼ºÀηÂÀÇ ±ÇÀÍ ½ÅÀåÀ» À§ÇÏ¿© IUPAP ³»¿¡ Working group on Women in Physics¸¦ ±¸¼ºÇϱâ·Î ÇÕÀÇÇÏ¿´´Ù. ¿ì¸® ³ª¶ó¿¡¼­µµ ÀÌ·± ±¹Á¦Àû Ãß¼¼¸¦ °¨¾ÈÇÏ¿© ¿©¼º ¹°¸®ÇÐÀÚÀÇ À§»ó Á¦°í¸¦ À§ÇÑ ÇÐȸ Â÷¿øÀÇ Á¶Ä¡°¡ ÀÖ¾î¾ß ÇÒ °ÍÀÌ´Ù.

±×¸®°í ´ÙÀ½ ÃÑȸ´Â 2002³â À¯·´À̳ª ¾Æ¼¼¾Æ Áö¿ª¿¡¼­ °®±â·Î Çϰí IUPAP »ç¹«½ÇÀº ½ºÀ§½º Á¦³×¹Ù¿¡ µÎ±â·Î ÇÕÀÇÇÏ°í »çÈê°£ÀÇ ÃÑȸ ¸·À» ³»·È´Ù.

À̹ø ÃÑȸ¸¦ ´Ù³à¿Í¼­ ´À³¤ Á¡Àº ¿ì¸® ³ª¶ó°¡ 3³â Àü¿¡ ºñÇÏ¿© ±¹Á¦Àû Ȱµ¿¿¡ ¸¹Àº ¹ßÀüÀ» °¡Á®¿Ô´Ù´Â Á¡À» ºÐ°úÀ§¿ø ¼±Á¤°úÁ¤¿¡¼­ ´À³¥ ¼ö ÀÖ¾ú°í ƯÈ÷ Çѱ¹¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ¿ìÈ£ÀûÀÎ ºÐÀ§±â¸¦ ÀÐÀ» ¼ö ÀÖ¾ú´ø °ÍÀº ÇÊÀÚ°¡ ÃÑȸ¿¡ µÎ ¹ø Âü¼®ÇÏ¿© ¸¹Àº ´ëÇ¥µé°ú ±³ºÐÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú´ø °ÍÀÌ µµ¿òÀÌ µÇ¾ú´Ù°í »ý°¢µÈ´Ù.
